Powering Greener Minds: Ecovolt’s Sustainability Journey with NYJC
NYJC students became "energy detectives" during Ecovolt's hands-on workshop, using smart plugs to track real-time energy consumption across campus. They explored carbon emissions, vampire energy, and sustainability fundamentals through interactive learning. Their efforts paid off when they won the prestigious School Green Award.

Last week, Ecovolt Technologies brought sustainability learning to life at Nanyang Junior College (NYJC) through an engaging hands-on workshop as part of the SGEcoFund Bootcamp. Designed to help students understand the real impact of energy usage in their school, the workshop turned everyday appliances into powerful teaching tools. We also equipped students with sufficient knowledge on our plugs for them to showcase them during the School Green Award (SGA).
The SGA, hosted by the Singapore Green Council, is a voluntary environmental program in Singapore that recognises and celebrates schools for their efforts in environmental advocacy and sustainability. Hence, students presented our Ecovolt Smart Plugs, showing the judges how they are used in NYJC.
Ecovolt is currently working with NYJC and is connected to numerous appliances across campus, such as their office commercial printer, water coolers and dispensers, TVs, AV systems, and projectors. Through these connections, Ecovolt helps the school monitor and optimise energy consumption, and hence carbon emissions. All these efforts go into supporting NYJC in its journey towards a more sustainable future.
During the workshop, our team guided students through NYJC’s energy background. This included NYJC’s monthly electricity bill and total annual carbon emissions. This gave students a clearer, real-world picture of the environmental challenges their school faces and how these challenges tie into broader national and global climate concerns. Students then became “energy detectives,” learning how to calculate carbon emissions, understand the different scopes of emissions, and gain a deeper grasp of Singapore’s energy and carbon landscape. These skills helped them connect their school’s data to the bigger sustainability landscape.

We were not just limited to the four walls of our classroom. Students were sent out on a hands-on mission: to use Ecovolt’s smart plugs and connect them to different appliances around the school. This allowed them to monitor real-time energy usage directly through our Ecovolt Dashboard (EcoMonitor Pro).

In addition to energy monitoring, students were introduced to key concepts such as “vampire energy,” building-level energy usage, carbon-math equations, and other fundamental concepts for understanding sustainability. To keep learning fun, we also played a round of sustainability-themed charades, where students acted out words related to energy and environmental responsibility. This helps to reinforce the concepts in a light-hearted way.
Lastly, we wrapped up the workshop with the NYJC ESG Carbon Snapshot, which allowed students to consolidate their learnings from the session. The NYJC students made Ecovolt proud by winning the SGA as they highlighted how Ecovolt’s smart plugs were used to monitor and reduce energy use on campus.

It was a joy to connect with these students and spread our mission. Through this workshop, we hope to continue empowering young minds with the knowledge and confidence to build a greener future.
